The 750 Motor Club Alfa Romeo Championship returns for the second time in as many months to the Snetterton circuit.
The impact of Covid-19 continues to affect motorsport and the planned triple header Anglesey meeting had to be cancelled, replaced by this single day double header for rounds 5 and 6 at Snetterton, this time played out on the 300 circuit as opposed to the 200 circuit used for rounds 1 and 2.
Leading the championship after the Festival Italia meeting with 74 points is Dave Messenger in his Darnell’s Engineering 156 3.2 GTA, from second placed George Osborne in his immaculate Alfa 75 3.2, both having had strong performances so far in their Power Trophy cars. In third place and heading up the Twin Spark class on 70 points is Simon Cresswell after consistent points scoring in the opening two meetings. All are returning this weekend and are looking to consolidate their early season form with another good weekend.
Heading up the modified class is 2015 champion Graham Seager in his powerful Revs Italia supported Alfa GTV, leading the class by a mere 3 points from Scott Austin in his 155, whose return to Alfa racing after a year’s break has been characterised by impressive performances at Snetterton and Brands Hatch. Completing the Modified line-up is Richard Thurbin, hoping to improve on his results to date in the impressively sure-footed Lancia Delta Integrale.
After his problems at Brands Hatch, the reigning champion Tom Hill will be looking to return to normal business in his Revs Italia 3.2 GT. Tom will be hoping to gain ground on the championship leaders at a venue where he holds 2 lap records on different circuit configurations and in different classes. Jamie Thwaites also returns to action once again hoping for an improvement on his fortune so far in his impressive Caged Steel Motorsport 3.2 litre 155 touring car. Andy Inman is getting the measure of his Revs Italia 156 GTA after making the switch from Twin Sparks at the beginning of last year. We can look forward to some exciting and competitive racing once again.
In the twin sparks, Simon is joined by second placed 2017 champion Andrew Bourke, their Bianco Motorsports cars separated by just 4 points after the first 4 races. Third in class and 8 points further adrift is Richard Ford in his newly acquired ex Tom Hill 156, with James Ford also joining in the action in his familiar 156. Making up what will undoubtedly be a very competitive group of cars are the 147s driven by Jon Billingsley, Stacey Dennis, Luke Powell and Steve O’Brien. Luke is getting to grips with the 147 in his first season of Alfa racing whilst Steve O’Brien has put in strong performances so far recording fastest lap in his last outing at Brands. Jon is no stranger to the 300 circuit, having taken two class wins in a 156 at last year’s season opener, whilst Stacey took two well earned second placed podium spots here in the 30 degree heat of two years ago.
A competitive entry in all classes should provide some enjoyable, close but fair racing at what is considered to be a popular venue with drivers and spectators.
